Message from the Electrical Safety Authority – AC Wiring to Sheds

March 7, 2014

Dear Camper,

Last fall a routine electrical inspection was performed at the  [Campground Name Removed]  by the Electrical Safety Authority. Repeat violations found during the inspection included the use of standard extension cords and flexible cables used as permanent wiring to the sheds.

These cords are not designed or approved to be buried in the ground, nor to replace permanent wiring. Their outer jacket will deteriorate over time and could pose a serious shock or fire hazard. In addition, when a flexible cord is run through the metal wall of a shed the sharp edge could cut into the cable and energize the entire shed. Cords are designed for the temporary hook up of equipment. Wiring to the shed for the entire camping season is considered as permanent wiring.

Flexible cords that are buried or used as permanent wiring shall be removed and replaced with an approved, permanent wiring method as per Rule 04-012(3)(a) of the 2012 Ontario Electrical Safety Code. If you are unsure as to how to install permanent wiring it is recommended that you acquire the services of a licensed electrical contractor. For additional information or a list of qualified electrical contractors, visit our Web site at www.esasafe.com . If you choose to do the electrical work yourself, it is required that you apply for Inspection with the Electrical Safety Authority by calling 1-877-372-7233.

Please take a few minutes to read the attached ‘Camping with Electrical Safety’ brochure for more information on the common violations found in campgrounds. For the safety of you and your families all of these violations will be enforced throughout the camping season.

Violations contrary to the Electricity Act are subject legal action and fines, under section 113 of the Electricity Act. Please be advised that if these violations are not corrected, the Electrical Safety Authority will issue a disconnection order to the Upper Thames Conservation Authority and the power to your campsite will be disconnected until such time as the electrical hazard(s) have been eliminated or corrected.

The Electrical Safety Authority is designated by Ontario Regulation 89/99 as the regulatory authority for the purposes of the Electricity Act, 1998 and regulations made pursuant thereto, including the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, Ontario Regulation 164/99 as amended by Ontario Regulation 10/02.
We look forward to your co-operation in this matter.
